I am one of those people who utilizes long distance to the extreme. Most of my family – including my mother, whom I feel compelled to call daily – do not live close by. My business requires many phone calls, all of which are long distance.
As a result, I have phone bills that would make the average person cringe.
Needless to say, I have been through every long distance company in existence in search of the "best deal" on long distance rates.
You’ve seen the advertisements - $.10, $.07, and even $.05 per minute. The only problem with these great rates are that they may only apply for "state-to-state" calls (meaning you’ll pay more if you make calls within your home state), there is often a monthly service charge (usually $5.95 per month), and you may be restricted as to "when" you can make your calls at these great rates (often it is only in the evening, and if you need to call someone during the day, you pay a much higher rate).
Then, if you get a phone card from any of these companies, there is usually a surcharge for every call (I have had quotes of $.85 per call and more) plus your per minute rate that can be as high as $.30 per minute. This is why I haven’t carried a phone card.
In November, I traveled to Texas and Louisiana and was away from home for nine days. I have three children who were staying with different relatives. The kids missed me, I missed them, so I had to call them often, as well as call my mother while making the long drive from and back to Ohio to assure her all was well.
Calling collect would have been very costly, so I picked up one of those phone cards you see at gas stations. I read the fine print, and even though it was full of it (fine print), it was still a less expensive alternative to collect calls.
During my travels, I quickly learned that there are as many differences in pre-paid phone cards as there are in regular long distance carriers.
Fortunately, after a few phone cards, I found one that was truly a great deal in all respects. First, it allowed me to make calls with NO connection charge for a mere 6.9 cents per minute. But for longer calls (like those to the kids and Mom) that would be over 10 minutes, I paid a small connection charge of $.49, and then only 2.9 cents per minute.
I am now using the card at home, because I can get these rates at any time of the day or night, with no monthly fee. Today, November 28, 2000, as I’m writing this, the $20.00 card that I purchased on November 13, 2000 still has 96 minutes available on it. At this rate, my usual $200.00 per month long distance bill will be only $40.00 - $50.00 per month.
I’ve also decided to put $5.00 phone cards in the Christmas cards I send my family, as well as give a phone card to my oldest, who has a tendency to call me collect when he’s with his father.
Because I like the service and the rates, and because I know there are many of you with kids in college or who travel, we are now carrying the phone card at The Romance Club.
