On Wednesday, October 27, 1999, Emmy Award-Winning daytime television actor Gregg Marx (pictured left, looking as rakishly handsome as ever) joined Laura Mills-Alcott (pictured right, talking as usual) in The Romance Club's weekly chat

Readers crowded in the chatroom and Gregg talked to them about MY ROMANCE - the Audio Romance series Gregg produces - as well as his acting career and famous family. What fun it was!

You can order MY ROMANCE titles simply by clicking here and going into our secure server shopping cart.

Below is the transcript.

Laura: Gregg, what made you decide to create MY ROMANCE?

Gregg Marx: primarily while I was on daytime TV--Days of Our Lives and As The World Turns...thats where I got the idea for the My Romance series I thought it would be great to marry the worlds of romance and daytime...basically the best of romantic fiction, performed by the hottest stars of daytime So far, it seems like my hunch was right...the response has been great!

Laura: Gregg, when did you actually start MY ROMANCE?

Marsha: Greg...How available are these tapes...Can you find them in the major bookstores, online and off??? GA

Gregg Marx: Well, our first release, "Too Wicked For Heaven", narrated by Barbara Crampton of The Bold And The Beautiful, came out in November 97, but the idea had been percolating in my brain for at least a couple of years before that By the way, Maxy, the tapes are available in a number of venues, including some Borders and Vrigin Megastores, some independent book and audiobooks stores, and at all the online bookstores, including amazon.com, b&n.com, borders.com, etc. In fact, "Enchantment", our

AynoGreen: Hiya Laura...<g>

Gregg Marx: second release is now number 4 on amazon's top 100 audio romance list

Kaywriter1: Excellent!

Gregg Marx: and "Moonlight', our newest release, just appeared on the list at number 53

TheFicster: Cool

GypsyTimeTravelr: that's splendid!

DanNic2066: great

Ruth Sil: congrats

Kaywriter1: I've listened to Moonlight--it's great! By the way, hello...

Gregg Marx: Thanks, everybody...yeah, its nice to know that we're doing something right Hey Kaywriter...thanks for the input..and hello to you too

Kaywriter1: :-)

Laura: ga Gypsy - you had a question? (we won't do protocol unless you ladies get out of control:))

GypsyTimeTravelr: I was just wondering... Have you totally given up on your initial idea to use the tapes to

Gregg Marx: Hmmm...I'd like to see that

Kaywriter1: You bad boy...

GypsyTimeTravelr: help children learn to read and how the plan worked. Also, if you had ever thought about using them to help adults learning to read - as an adult literacy

Gregg Marx: Can't help it...its genetic

GypsyTimeTravelr: volunteer I can tell you there's a need for that.

Kaywriter1: LOL

GypsyTimeTravelr: LOL! we like bad boys ;)

Gregg Marx: Actually Gypsy, the initial idea for the tapes was to record childrens literature to encourage them to learn to read. At that time however, the children's audio market was as they say "saturated", so we looked for another genre, keeping the basic idea of soap stars narrating...and actually, the 'marriage between romance and daytime is really perfect. That said, I still would like to do a children's line once My Romance is well established. And I love the idea of promoting literacy...in fact we've done quite a bit of work with RWA ..and as you probably know, literacy is one of their big projects...GA

Laura: Tell them about the 3 current MY ROMANCE titles, Gregg - titles, actors, authors...ga

Kaywriter1: I'm currently watching THE PERFECT HERO documentary--you're on screen right now promoting MY

Gregg Marx: Our first release is Too Wicked For Heaven by Deborah Martin, performed by

Kaywriter1: ROMANCE--

Laura: <gads, I have that video and have never watched it - THE PERFECT HERO>

Gregg Marx: Barbara Crampton (Bold and the Beautiful/Young and Restless) After the first one, I decided to use famous soap couples instead of just individual "divas of daytime"...that is something we incorporated into the second two "Enchantment" by Christina Skye (performed by Wally Kurth and Rena Sofer of General Hospital)

Kaywriter1: I love the couple idea...really adds to the listening experience

GypsyTimeTravelr: you wouldn't wanna do a Robert Scorpio/Anna Devane duo would you? I know they're old, but I loved their accents ;0

Cloe: lol

Gregg Marx: and "Moonlight" by Suzanne Forster (performed by Kim Zimmer and Robert Newman from Guiding Light). The two voices make it much more dramatic...like a play, instead of a simple

Laura: <Gypsy, they'd be too cool for a regency>

GypsyTimeTravelr: i don't know.... I could picture Scorpio in tights ;) LOLOL

Gregg Marx: narration. With the second edition we also began including a recorded message from the author at the end of each tape...sort of a personal note to the listeners, and that has been a big hit.

GypsyTimeTravelr: hiya connie ;)

Gregg Marx: Gypsy, that's not a bad idea...I'm open to all suggestions...ultimately, we'll be using stars from all the soaps to narrate.

GypsyTimeTravelr: rofl!

Cloe: LOL -- yes she is....

OnlineHost: LDeason20 has entered the room.

Gregg Marx: Well maybe we're related...in a dyslexic sort of way...

HarpoFan: LOL!

Gregg Marx: Thanks, Harpo. By the way, Harpo was truly one of my favorite uncles,

Cloe: Do you abridge the books you record?

Gregg Marx: as a matter of fact, I was once told by a psychic that Harpo (of all my uncles)

Ruth Sil: Gregg, it looks like you have a lot of kissin cousins

Gregg Marx: is my spirit guide...whether or not you buy that stuff...it was kinda cool to think about.

DanNic2066: Gregg do u have a presonal quote! you apply to every day life?

Gregg Marx: Cloe, we start off with anthology-length material, so the abridging is quite minimal . We do as little as possible, since I take great pains to find material I like and think will work well for the My Romance series, so when I find an author's voice that I respond to the last thing I want to do is chop it to pieces. ga

Cloe: Glad to hear it -- I like getting the "whole" story ;)

Kaywriter1: What are you currently working on?

Gregg Marx: I think most people do, that's why we're doing it that way...I am committed (some people think I SHOULD be) to keeping My Romance at a very high level in every

Kaywriter1: LOL

Laura: ga Gypsy (no protocol as long as we remain in control:))

Gregg Marx: area, from selection of material and actors, through the recording, music selection, cover

HarpoFan: <sneaking out> Have a great night folks :)

Gregg Marx: art, etc. Bye Harpo...

GypsyTimeTravelr: just didn't wanna jump in front of anyone

OnlineHost: Kitty76105 has entered the room.

Ruth Sil: Nite Hrpo

GypsyTimeTravelr: Gregg, have you considered recording some of the classic romances such as Wuthering Heights

Cloe: Thanks Gregg, I know that attention will keep people coming back for more!

GypsyTimeTravelr: Jane Eyre - or even some of Shakespeare's romances? Something to pique the interests of your listeners into reading something different? ga

Gregg Marx: Hmmm,a personal quote, huh? Well, Dan, it sounds trite, but remember that Nike commerical..

GypsyTimeTravelr: I don't mean that in a negative way, I just thought you could make those more

Gregg Marx: "do what you love...the rest will follow"? I really like what that says

Kaywriter1: Ah, I like that one...good philosophy

GypsyTimeTravelr: accessible to people who might be afraid of them

Gregg Marx: about living your life...(by the way, I have a feeling the ad guys borrowed that from somebody) Gypsy, I have always liked the idea of doing "the classics"...material in the public domain, and hopefully we will...its such great source material. ga

GypsyTimeTravelr: thanks! I was just thinking, with your covers - and a pair of hot soap stars

Cloe: Ever heard of Diana Gabaldon? Her books would be a challenge... ;)

GypsyTimeTravelr: you might picque the interest and actually hook people who might

Gregg Marx: I like the way you think...

GypsyTimeTravelr: be afraid of them otherwise :) er... you've gotta find EXACTLY the right accent w/ Jamie or you'll have LOTS of Outlandish mad at you ;)

Cloe: lol

Laura: Gregg, Kayla asked what you were working on now ga

Gregg Marx: Yes Cloe. In fact, I just met Diana at the Women's Expo in Arizona earlier this year...she's really an interesting lady...I must confess I haven't read her books yet, but

Cloe: Well be prepared -- they're LONG lol

Gregg Marx: I'd like to. Hey Kay, I'm not ignoring you...it just that my fingers can't go as fast like

OnlineHost: Marsha has entered the room.

GypsyTimeTravelr: and don't abridge them. :) The Outlandish fans will know LOL

Laura: wb Marsha:)

GypsyTimeTravelr: wb Marsha :)

Gregg Marx: as I'd like. Actually, our next release will most likely be a Shannon Drake title...

Marsha: LOL... What a FUN night

TheFicster: wb Maxy

Kaywriter1: I listened to one of hers on audio...it was at least 4 tapes, maybe 8

OnlineHost: Mboyl has entered the room.

GypsyTimeTravelr: hi mb :)

Gregg Marx: "Vanquish the Night"...its a great story...a vampire romance!

AynoGreen: Hey Mo...

OnlineHost: Ka3co has entered the room.

GypsyTimeTravelr: ahhh.. cool!

Mboyl: Hi Gypsy

Gregg Marx: How was it Kay?

Marsha: I know that one will be popular around here:)

Mboyl: Hey Lee********** Hi Marsha!!!

Kaywriter1: It was too long, I thought. A real time investment

Mboyl: Hey Helen*********

Laura: Marsha, her books are 800 pages or something - it would take 25 cassettes or more to do a DG

Gregg Marx: Hello to the new arrivals...

Cloe: Outlander took 36 to be exact ;)

Gregg Marx: That's right Laura...and all those cassettes= $$$

GypsyTimeTravelr: Kay!! You can't give up on Outlander! It's worth every page, I promoise

Cloe: but it would be nice to have a man read Jamie.... If he had the accent right

Laura: sheesh, Cloe

Cloe: lol

Marsha: Gabaldon has unabridged tapes...I have never had time to listen to them

GypsyTimeTravelr: lol, Cloe

Gregg Marx: You know, Cloe...there are some wonderful daytime actors who could definitely do justice

Cloe: women would be melting all over the place LOL

Mboyl: <~~~~Hasnt read Outlander yet

Kitty76105: Hi MO :)

Kaywriter1: Gregg, how long does it take to produce a 90 min tape?

Gregg Marx: to the material...Actually, a lot of thought goes into matching actors and material

Cloe: That's why I brought it up Gregg ;)

AynoGreen: <--me either...<g>

Kitty76105: ?

Mboyl: Question? Are we going formal or informal tonite?

Marsha: Gregg... You are feeding into the Jamie Junkies around here....LOL.... they'll be envisioning you in a kilt in a minute

Laura: MB, as long as we don't overwhelm Gregg, informal:)

Gregg Marx: Good point, Cloe.

Cloe: ROFLOL

GypsyTimeTravelr: all of you have a treat in store for you. Gregg, your problem might not be the accent so much as your pictures.. Most of us have an image

Mboyl: ok thanks Laura

GypsyTimeTravelr: of our "perfect" Jamie

Kaywriter1: <By the way, I think Gregg should hire himself to do the audio for one of his books...he's

GypsyTimeTravelr: it's hard to live up to all those different images

Kaywriter1: got a great voice

Cloe: No pictures -- a voice would be wonderful though ;)

Gregg Marx: Maxy, I look pretty good in a kilt..at least thats what they tell me

Mboyl: Is Gregg the Gregg that was on Days of Our Lives years ago?

GypsyTimeTravelr: Oh??? Pictures?

Kaywriter1: Hmm...sounds good, LOL!

Marsha: Hmmm....

Laura: Yes, MB:)

Gregg Marx: Yeah Mboyl, one and the same

OnlineHost: OHostMike has entered the room.

GypsyTimeTravelr: hi Mike :)

Kitty76105: Gregg have you ever tried doing the Romance mystery types books like Catherine Coulter does ga

Mboyl: Oh way kewl.....I used to watch you!!

Laura: <do we get the coolests guests in here, or what???>

Gregg Marx: Kay, it takes about 10 hours of recording time to produce each edition of My Romance, and th

Marsha: BTW... our next guest is cancelled...so chat on as long as you are comfortable

Cloe: BTW---y'all are welcome to stay tonight -- due to technical difficulties the Jennifer Crusie chat had to be cancelled

Marsha: GMTA...LOL

GypsyTimeTravelr: Gregg should come back for the Halloween party Saturday night and tell us about his

Cloe: lol

GypsyTimeTravelr: vampire book on tape :)

Marsha: <---My technical difficulties

Kaywriter1: I was a HUGE Days fan...not anymore.

OnlineHost: Tami100673 has entered the room.

Gregg Marx: then countless hours in editing, selecting and laying in music, etc.

Mboyl: Gregg is a HUNK....LOL thats all I gotta say

OHostMike: Big delay here...Hi all :)

Gregg Marx: Its pretty time-consuming, but like I said, its really important to me that the

GypsyTimeTravelr: gee, and I was afraid my drool was showing, mb ;)

Cloe: Are you still doing books on tape for children?

Laura: HE's even cuter in person, MB:)

Kaywriter1: And a sweetheart, Mboyl

Mboyl: Me too Kay...but then that thing called work prevented me from watching it

Gregg Marx: quality be exceptional, so in the long run, I think its worth all the long hours

Marsha: Mo... I have one word for you... VCR

GypsyTimeTravelr: lolol marsha I haven't figured out how to record on mine yet

Laura: Gregg, Kitty asked if you'd considered doing romance mysteries? ga

Kaywriter1: Days isn't worth a VCR these days

Gregg Marx: Thanks, Mboyl...always nice to be included in the HUNK category

Mboyl: LOL Marsha...I'm online too much to watch the tapes

Ruth Sil: Interesting meeting. See you again. thanks Gregg. signed andother Marx. Nite all.

Gregg Marx: Absolutely, Kitty. In fact, we're going to be covering all aspects of the

Laura: Night Ruth

Gregg Marx: genre...contemporary, historical, mystery, etc. And there seems to be

Mboyl: Honestly I cant get into Days anymore...cant even figure out who is who anymore...liked it more when they centered around the Horton family more

Kaywriter1: Well....I have a romantic suspense.... <g>

Gregg Marx: a big swing to romantic mysteries and suspens these days

Marsha: I love those...

Kitty76105: That's terrific Gregg I will have to check out your tapes:)

TheFicster: I do too. :)

Marsha: Tami Hoag, etc

Mboyl: I can dig anything if it has SOME romance in it...as Lee will attest to...LOL

Gregg Marx: Thanks, Kitty...l really think you'll like what you hear. And I'd love to know what you

GypsyTimeTravelr: I wouldn't even consider Hoag romance. Her stories are wonderful!

Laura: OK, Gregg... so we can quell the questions bubbling up here...

Gregg Marx: think. Listener feedback is very important to us...it helps define

Marsha: Thats the beauty of it...so many good writers are considered beyond romance, but still have their roots here...

Mboyl: What are you doing now Gregg besides the audio books?

Gregg Marx: where we're going...and how we get there. ga

Laura: What about your acting? What are you doing or planning to do?

Kitty76105: Gregg can you give me the name of a tape you would recommend...

Marsha: Yes...Thinking....ALL My Children...the one I watch....LOL

Cloe: there you go -- 3 questions at once LOL

Kaywriter1: I like MOONLIGHT...

Gregg Marx: While I haven't been doing any oncamera work for a number of years, I still am very

GypsyTimeTravelr: nothing like putting you in the hotseat :)

Mboyl: LOL Cloe...and all about the same thing too

Gregg Marx: busy doing voice-overs, but starting this company is really a full-time job...but one I'm having a blast doing.

Kaywriter1: <and what a voice> :-)

Cloe: I asked earlier if you're still doing childrens books (my question got lost -- lol)?

Mboyl: <~~~thinking Gregg probably likes HOT seats....LOL

Gregg Marx: I really love each of our three editions, each for somewhat different reasons, but I'd start out with either Enchantment or Moonlight (and then get the other two, of

OnlineHost: Ka3co has entered the room.

AynoGreen: Has the success of British films/TV shows/books been part of the influence to do more

Gregg Marx: course). And yes, Mboyl...how did you know?

AynoGreen: romance mysteries/suspence?

Kitty76105: thanks Gregg

Mboyl: LOL good guess Gregg

OnlineHost: AJsMomma has entered the room.

Mboyl: wow so many OHosts...I feel like I'm in a leader chat....LOL

Gregg Marx: Cloe, I hope to eventually return to the childrens book idea, I still think its a very viable (and important) project. Right now, my hands are full of romance (not a bad thing)

Cloe: We love to listen to kids books when we travel -- it's hard to find good recordings! and you can't listen to much with an 8 yr old & 4 yr old in the car....

Kaywriter1: Lucky guy...LOL

Gregg Marx: Yeah, you're right...when and if we do a childrens line, I want them to be of the same quality as the romances ...

Cloe: Check out Charlotte's Web read by E.B. White -- that was the best one we've listened to so far....

Marsha: I bet many of your soap friends that are parents would love doing those too

Gregg Marx: That was one of my favorite books as a kid...what a kick it would be to do that one

OnlineHost: DanNic2066 has entered the room.

Cloe: Harry Potter......

GypsyTimeTravelr: thanks so much for your time, Gregg.

Cloe: The reading by Mr. White would be hard to top....

GypsyTimeTravelr: Goodnihgt y'all :)

Marsha: Good LUCK... can you imagine the cost of those rights....LOL

Kaywriter1: So much controversy over that one..it would sell

Laura: night Gypsy

Kitty76105: That would be a good one Cloe :)

Gregg Marx: You're right Maxy...in fact, I remember (nite, Gypsy) Kim Zimmer mentioning

OnlineHost: JA1BA2 has entered the room.

Gregg Marx: when we were recording"Moonlight' that her kids wouldn't be listening to this particular project of hers (Moonlight) for a few years (subject matter, you know)

Cloe: lol

Kitty76105: LOL

Mboyl: LOL and I like Kim too....she's a great actress

Cloe: It's nice to have books on tape that the whole family can enjoy but I like tapes that are just for me too :)

Gregg Marx: Kim IS a wonderful actress...she has been at the top of my actor'wish list' from day one

Mboyl: thinking I'll have to get a copy of "Moonlight" if possible...

Marsha: Yep... Bubble bath, aromatherapy and a tape...LOL

Gregg Marx: Right Cloe...that's what these tapes are really all about...a chance to take some time and escape from the everyday, into another world, really

Kitty76105: LOl Marsh sounds heavenly

Marsha: Beats getting wet pages...

Gregg Marx: Actually, I spoke to a woman last year at RWA who said that's exactly what she

Kitty76105: LOL or dropping the book in the tub :)

Kaywriter1: LOL

Gregg Marx: does with the audios...runs a bubble bath, lights a candle, and

Mboyl: LOL on another world....my friends think I come from another world already

Gregg Marx: checks out for a while (and the best thing, she said...she doesn't get the pages wet)

Kaywriter1: I love them for driving...

Laura: Another World... I wish I could be there again

Kitty76105: yes we do MO LOL

Kaywriter1: As in the soap?

Laura: of course

Mboyl: Loved that soap too Laura

Kaywriter1: I was depressed when they cut that one! Especially considering what replaced it!

Laura: I loved Felicia (terrific portrayal of the romance author)

Kaywriter1: So did I.

Marsha: :::ashamed to say I only watch ABC:::

Kaywriter1: <sigh>

Mboyl: My parents got me hooked at a young age to both Days and Another World....LOL

Kaywriter1: You should be, LOL

Cloe: GH here....

Kaywriter1: Mine too, MBoyl

Gregg Marx: Laura, Linda Dano is also on my 'short list' of actors...she's terrific

AynoGreen: <--old Luke and Laura fan here

Laura: OK, ladies, Gregg has time for a few more questions before he has to get back to work

Kaywriter1: Oh, you've got to get her, Gregg!

Laura: Bo and Hope, too, Gregg?

Mboyl: Loved Linda Dano...

Gregg Marx: and she has a special place in my heart...she sat next to me and

Kaywriter1: Night y'all...I'

Laura: Night, Kay

Mboyl: Nite Kay!!!

Gregg Marx: held my hand at the Emmy's in 87 when I won...I was pretty nervous, and she was great...

Kaywriter1: I've been moving stuff all day into storage

Kitty76105: Gregg do you do all the recording by your self or do you use other people voices as well?

Mboyl: where can we find these tapes that Gregg is doing?

Cloe: Do you have a web site for "My Romance"?

Gregg Marx: I'll never forget that. Bye Kay...thanks for chatting.

Laura: you know who else, Gregg? Carl (can't remember the actor's name) from AW

Kaywriter1: Bye...

Laura: Charles Keating he's got a really great voice

Kaywriter1: Oh, saw that name and had to say YES

OnlineHost: Crazy4CW2 has entered the room.

Gregg Marx: Actually Kitty, I don't do any of the narration myself...I produce and direct...

Kaywriter1: Now I'm gone...

Laura: LOL, night again, Kay

Mboyl: ohhh Victor.....the guy who kept coming back from the dead...LOL

Gregg Marx: the whole idea behind the My Romance series is that it features

Marsha: Gregg...where can we find those tapes of yours???

Gregg Marx: performances by present daytime stars. Although I would like to

Laura: We have them at TRC, but haven't put them in the shopping cart yet

Gregg Marx: do a 'veteran's series'...maybe I'll do one of those (maybe opposite Hillary "

Laura: will do that in the morning

Mboyl: oh gee Gregg....ya gotta do ONE.....we wanna hear your voice again!!!

Gregg Marx: Bailey Smith who played Margo to my Tom on ATWT)

Kitty76105: so basically each tape has female and male character voices ?

Gregg Marx: Maxy, the tapes are available on line at amazon.com,barnes and noble. com, borders.com, etc.

Cloe: Do you have voices for all of the characters?

Laura: <for anyone that missed it - check The Romance Club tomorrow, also, if you'd like to order Gregg's tapes>

Marsha: I love the fact you have male and female...it always bothers me to hear a narrator playing opposite sex

Gregg Marx: Also at Soap Digest online, and at some Virgin Megastores, Borders Books and Music, and a number of independent book and audiobook stores across the country (even some in Canada)

Mboyl: what name do we look under to find them?

Gregg Marx: Yeah, Kitty, and its much more effective and dramatic than having one reader read all the

Kitty76105: I like that Idea as well Marsha I will really have to check them out :)

Gregg Marx: parts, both male and female.

Laura: At TRC it will be in the shopping cart, under MY ROMANCE

Gregg Marx: Thanks for mentioning that Laura.

Mboyl: ok thanks Laura

Kitty76105: I agree Gregg I have tried audio tapes in the past and have never cared for the narrators

Gregg Marx: All the titles are part of the My Romance series, but the individual titles are

Mboyl: ewww cant imagine a guy trying to pass himself off as a gal on audio.....LOL

Gregg Marx: Too Wicked For Heaven by Deborah Martin, Enchantment, by Christina Skye, and Moonlight, by Suzanne Forster

Kitty76105: LOL I know MO and some time the voices never sound like you want them to be LOL

Marsha: And what else do you have coming out...future??

Laura: Gregg said the narrator depends on whose POV the story is in at the time - is that right, Gregg?

Kitty76105: Love Christina Skye she a great author

Marsha: (forgive me I was playing bumpathon earlier)

Laura: OK, everyone, it's about that time, and we've kept Gregg for 1/2 hour longer than we were supposed to

Gregg Marx: Thats correct, Laura. And that interplay between the two voices is really

Laura: so we're going to have to let him go <ahhhhhh>

AynoGreen: Nice to have met you Gregg, continued good luck on your projects.

OnlineHost: Fishon2 has entered the room.

Gregg Marx: incredibly effective

Laura: Remember, you can get any of the 3 MY ROMANCE titles at The Romance Club
