A message from Alice...

Hello, Everybody. I send greetings to you from my latest way station on the road to what I'll be if and when I ever grow up. I feel, in fact, like I've been granted a new lease on life and a fresh glimpse of what might be my own destiny.

The publishing world, the writers' community and most of all my very generous readership have supported me through many years as a novelist. No one could possibly be more grateful for that support than I am.

Now, I find myself taking my first very fledgling steps on a new path. Since my semi-retirement from literary agenting last spring, I have been making my initial stumbling attempts at writing nonfiction.

First, I took a course in magazine writing. There I was with the roles reversed, as the student rather than the teacher for a change. And, boy, did I have a lot to learn.

Most important among those discoveries was my affinity and love for the personal essay form. Taking the material of my own life and shaping it by using the skills I had honed as a novelist -- developing character, setting scenes, building tension, writing dialogue.

I've long known that one of the reasons I wrote novels was that I wasn't ready to tell my truths straight on. I'm on the verge of sixty now and I'm ready at last. The result is my first essay sale to MORE Magazine which is a spinoff of Ladies Home Journal targeted to women over forty.

"Have You Lost Your Mind?" is about my decision to semi-retire from a successful business in large part to help raise my granddaughter. It will appear in either the April 2001 issue, and I could not be more thrilled.

So, there is life after retirement and for me a lot of that life is about finding new ways to put words together for new purposes. I hope you will enjoy reading those words as much as I'v enjoyed writing them because that is a whole lot.
